I remember my first morel, don’t we all? I grew up in Missouri where we hunted morels in the area around the creek. The biggest morels would show up on TV. On more than one occasion there would be a picture in the paper of a huge morel tied to the top of a vehicle. As a youngster I believed it was a real morel! When we left Missouri and moved to California that was the last of the hunt. We didn’t know that the elusive mushroom grew in California as well. Ten years later we found out that morels grew in the hills at about 4,000 feet. On our first trip up the mountain with my mom I was sitting in front with the instructions to look for morels. My eyes were pealed. “There’s one!” I shouted so excitedly. “A six-foot morel!” I still believed that they could grow that tall. After I convinced my mom to turn around to check it out I learned my lesson about trick photography. How big was your largest morel?
